Speech for “Win Honor for the Olympics; Make Efforts for Good Manners” ‘Red Scarf Learning English’ Speech Competition

尊敬的来宾，各位老师、亲爱的小朋友们：

Our honored guests and teachers, dear kids,

大家好！很高兴参加今天的活动。／刚才观看了12名小选手精彩的演讲，看到你们用流利的英语抒发自己对祖国、对家乡、对生活的热爱，表达争当文明小主人，为08年奥运贡献力量的决心，我感到由衷的欣慰。／首先向12名小选手出色的表现表示祝贺。

Good morning. I’m very please to present this speech competition. /On watching the brilliant speeches given by the 12 competitors, I am gratified that you could express, in English, your love to our country, our home, and our lives; and as well showed your determination to be the elegant host to make efforts for the Olympics. /So congratulations to the 12 competitors for your remarkable presentation.

举办一届有特色、高水平的奥运会是中国人民的梦想，绿色奥运、科技奥运、人文奥运是我们的承诺，也是我们的口号。／北京是一个国际化的大都市，也是08年奥运的举办地，为奥运做好服务，向世界人民展示中国人民的精神风貌，是我们每一位北京市民的神圣责任。／申奥成功以来，我区成立了市民学外语办公室，发动广大市民都来学习英语，目的就是为了提高市民的英语水平，为奥运会的成功举办创造一个良好的人文环境。

To hold a special and high standard Olympic Games is the dream of all our Chinese. “The Green Olympics; the Scientific Olympics; the Humanistic Olympics” is not only our slogan but also our promise. /Beijing is an international city, where the 2008 Olympics will take place. Everybody in Beijing is supposed to show to the world the spirit and the power of China. /Since the grant of the right to Beijing to host the 2008 Olympics, an office concerned about the English study of our people has been set up to encourage everybody to learn English, in order to improve people’s English to create a favorable cultural environment.

作为北京的少年儿童，学好英语不仅是掌握了一门与世界沟通、交流的技能，更是服务北京奥运、加快北京国际化进程的需要，学英语要从娃娃抓起，搞好少年儿童的学英语活动非常重要。／今天，团区委、区少工委在这里举行英语演讲比赛，是鼓励少年儿童学习英语的一个很好的举措，像这样的活动以后要经常开展。

As a youngster in Beijing, you should learn English well not only to master a language to communicate with the world, but also to serve for the Beijing Olympics, and to help speed up the internationalization of Beijing. /Today, the English speech competition held by the Youth League Committee of Tong Zhou District and the China Young Pioneer Committee of Tong Zhou District is a good attempt to encourage our youth to study English. And we will have more such activities to go.

希望在座的少年儿童能够向参赛的小选手学习，努力学好英语，掌握打开世界之门的钥匙。带动家人和亲朋好友共同学习英语，当好08年奥运的主人翁，以良好的精神风貌，迎接来自世界各国的朋友。

I hope the youngsters presented here will follow our competitors to study English hard so as to hold the key to the world. And also, please bring along all your kith and kin to learn English together, to be hospitable hosts together, and to welcome friends from all over the world in a high spirit.
